On November 4, 2023, 14-year-old Knox MacEwen tragically collapsed and passed away while running a 5K in Florida, NBC 6 South Florida reported.
A Young Life Cut Short
Knox was a dedicated member of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) at Western High School in Davie, Florida. While participating in a 5K event organized by the program, he suddenly suffered a cardiac arrest. Despite being rushed to Memorial Hospital Miramar, Knox was later pronounced dead.

One of our JROTC students passed away this morning after being transported to the hospital.” He offered his condolences to Knox’s family and friends, encouraging the community to support the grieving family during this difficult time.
Remembering Knox
Knox was an active member of his community and a loving student. Pastor Jon Elswick of Crossway Church in Cooper City, where Knox was involved, expressed how deeply the loss was felt. He shared, “Knox’s dad said to me a couple of days ago, that Knox was the best of us, and I love that phrase because if you knew Knox, that’s who he was.”
Knox was remembered as a kind, caring, and funny young boy, who touched the lives of everyone around him.
A Strong Legacy
JROTC, a U.S. Armed Forces-sponsored program, teaches young people important life skills like self-discipline and leadership. Knox’s involvement in this program, alongside his active role in the church, reflected his dedication and character.
Our hearts go out to Knox’s family and friends during this tragic time. May he rest in peace.
