The day we adopted Sam, a cheerful three-year-old boy, was meant to be one of the happiest days of our lives. But I never imagined it would lead to something that would change everything for us.
While I was unpacking Sam’s belongings, my husband, Mark, offered to give him a bath. Just 47 seconds later, Mark came out of the bathroom, looking pale and uneasy. “We have to return him,” he said firmly. I was stunned by his words and couldn’t understand why he felt that way.
It wasn’t until I saw the birthmark on Sam’s foot that things started to make sense. The birthmark was identical to one on Mark’s foot. My heart sank, and I felt a wave of disbelief. Could Mark have been hiding something from me?
Over the next few days, Mark grew distant. He stayed longer at work and avoided being around Sam and me. Left alone with Sam, I found myself bonding deeply with him. He brought so much joy and warmth into my life, and I couldn’t imagine letting him go.
Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that Mark was keeping a secret. To find out the truth, I ordered a DNA test for Sam. The results confirmed what I feared: Mark was Sam’s biological father.
When I confronted him, Mark admitted to having a one-night stand at a conference four years ago. Sam was the result of that encounter. I was devastated. It felt like my trust had been completely shattered.
Though I was hurt, I knew I had to put Sam’s well-being first. I made the decision to file for divorce and seek full custody of Sam. Mark didn’t contest it, and the divorce was finalized without delay.
Looking back, I know I made the right choice. Sam is now thriving, and I’m grateful to be his mother. This experience taught me that love is a choice. It’s not always simple, but it’s always worth it when it’s for the right reasons. Sam became my strength and my family.
