Travelling with pets can be rewarding yet challenging. For many, pets are more than just animals—they’re family. Over the years, the trend of bringing pets along on trips has grown, with cats and dogs frequently spotted in airports.
Traditionally, pets traveled in cargo areas, secured in crates and collected at baggage claim. Though rare, incidents during transport made some owners hesitant, worried their pets might feel stressed or unsafe. This concern has driven demand for pets to travel in cabins, resulting in over 20 airlines allowing pets onboard by late 2023.
Airlines like Delta, United, and Lufthansa now permit pets in cabins, but rules vary. Restrictions often involve age, size, and breed. For example, puppies might need to be 8-12 weeks old, and carriers must fit under seats. Service animals, however, are exempt from most restrictions and often sit with their owners. Emotional support animals, while comforting, usually fall under pet policies unless they meet specific criteria.
Service animals are critical for individuals with medical needs, like seizure alerts or cardiac assistance. While they fly for free, some passengers question the presence of general pets on flights. In 2019, a passenger shared concerns about dogs onboard, saying it felt unnecessary unless medically essential.
For those travelling with pets, preparation is key. Costs include vet checkups, vaccinations, and travel accessories.
