Beandri Booysen: Girl in South Africa with progeria dies

Beandri Booysen’s life was a story of strength, love, and positivity. Despite battling a rare and heartbreaking illness, she always radiated joy that touched many people. Sadly, Beandri passed away at just 19 years old, just days before Christmas. But her inspiring story will live on.

Beandri was born in South Africa and was diagnosed with Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome when she was only seven months old. This rare genetic condition causes the body to age eight times faster than normal. The chances of being born with progeria are 1 in 4 million, and fewer than 400 people worldwide have it. Doctors told her family she wouldn’t survive past her teenage years, but Beandri proved them wrong.

Despite the disease’s physical toll, Beandri refused to let it define her. She was small, weighing just 12 kilograms (26 pounds), but her spirit was limitless. Beandri went to school, dreamed of becoming a teacher, and even hoped for a future where she would marry and have twins. She lived every day to the fullest, appreciating each moment.

On social media, Beandri found her voice and shared her journey with the world. She posted motivational videos on TikTok, where she gained nearly 300,000 followers. Her motto, “Be yourself. Love yourself. Believe in yourself,” inspired many. Through her posts, she also raised awareness about progeria, helping others understand the condition.

After celebrating her 19th birthday, Beandri faced a sudden health crisis. Her mother, Bea, shared the heartbreaking news on December 18 that Beandri had passed away. In her message, Bea described her daughter as a “vibrant personality” and the “last surviving person in South Africa with progeria.”

Tributes flooded TikTok as news of Beandri’s death spread. Her family asked for privacy during this difficult time, but one thing is clear: Beandri’s light will continue to shine through the many lives she touched.

Her story serves as a reminder to live with bravery, joy, and love, just like Beandri did every day.
