Bruce Willis: A Family’s Journey Through Dementia
When Bruce Willis stepped away from the limelight, fans wondered why. Soon after, his family shared the news: the iconic actor had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a condition affecting his communication and cognitive abilities.
“Our family wanted to start by expressing our gratitude for the love and support we’ve received since Bruce’s original diagnosis,” his daughter Rumer Willis shared. The family initially revealed his struggle with aphasia in 2022, but his condition has since progressed into FTD, which is known to impact language and behavior.
Challenges at Home
Bruce’s wife, Emma, has taken on the role of caregiver, frequently updating fans about his journey. She candidly described the challenges of dementia, calling it a “family disease.” Speaking during World Frontotemporal Dementia Awareness Week, she highlighted its impact not only on Bruce but on their daughters as well.
Recently, the family expressed concern about his weight loss and decreased appetite. A source close to the family shared that ensuring he eats regularly and maintains a healthy diet has become a daily challenge. “He doesn’t express hunger much,” the source revealed, noting the toll dementia is taking on his health.
Communication Struggles
Friends and family have noticed Bruce’s diminishing communication skills. Glenn Gordon, a close friend, shared, “He’s no longer verbal and can’t read like he used to.” Despite this, loved ones, including his ex-wife Demi Moore and their daughters, make it a priority to spend as much time as possible with him.
Emma has urged people not to focus solely on the negative aspects of dementia. “Grief and love can coexist,” she posted on Instagram. The family remains hopeful for stability or improvement in Bruce’s condition and focuses on surrounding him with love and support.
No matter what, Bruce’s family is determined to make every moment count.
