College Student’s Final Moments Revealed During Trial of Her Killer
The tragic death of 22-year-old college student Laken Riley has come into focus as her killer, Jose Ibarra, 26, was sentenced to life in prison without parole. During the November 2024 trial, Riley’s last text message to her mother was revealed: “Good morning about to go for run if you’re free to talk [sic].” This was sent just before she went jogging on the University of Georgia (UGA) campus on February 22.
Surveillance footage presented in court showed Riley jogging along Milledge Avenue before heading toward a wooded trail. At 9:11 a.m., she made a 911 call. By 12:07 p.m., friends reported her missing after she failed to return. Police found Riley’s body in the woods near Lake Herrick shortly after beginning their search.
Authorities described Ibarra’s actions as a “crime of opportunity.” He was convicted of multiple charges, including murder, kidnapping, and concealing Riley’s death. Officials confirmed Ibarra was not connected to Riley and had no violent criminal history before this incident.
