Couple with Down syndrome decide to have children, face criticism

Many people feel the pressure of societal expectations when it comes to marriage and children. Couples who decide not to have kids often face questions or judgment from others. But what happens when someone who is perceived as “different” decides to become a parent?

Over 20 years ago, Patti White from California received surprising news—her daughter, Lisa, was pregnant. Lisa has Down syndrome, a condition that impacts physical and mental abilities to varying degrees. However, many individuals with Down syndrome can live independent lives.

Lisa, at 29 years old, was living on her own and working full-time at Goodwill. She also had a boyfriend, who also had Down syndrome. Patti supported Lisa’s independent life, discussing topics like safe relationships with her daughter.

Doctors at the time believed men with Down syndrome couldn’t father children, so Lisa’s pregnancy was unexpected. Patti recalled Lisa’s excited voicemail: “Hi mom, you’re going to be a grandmother!”

Lisa’s decision to keep the baby faced criticism. Many doubted her ability to be a good parent. Despite the negativity, Lisa’s family stood by her. Her pregnancy was high-risk but otherwise normal. She attended prenatal classes and prepared for her new role.

Her son, Nic, was born four weeks early and, like his parents, has Down syndrome. While Nic’s father tried to be involved, the relationship didn’t last, and he sadly passed away when Nic was five.

Lisa raised Nic with the help of her mother, Patti. Nic grew up surrounded by love and care, becoming an independent, thriving adult. At 24, he’s a college graduate and proud of his mom and grandmother.

Nic shared: “I have two moms. My mom Lisa gave me life, love, and everything I needed.”

Patti once posted: “Lisa and Nic have overcome so much. They’ve shown the world the strength and love people with Down syndrome have.”

This family’s story reminds us of the importance of support, love, and valuing everyone’s unique journey. It’s a story of resilience that inspires others to make their own choices with confidence.
