Why Using Your Phone on the Toilet Could Be Bad for Your Health
If you’re one of the many people who use their phone while sitting on the toilet, you might be unknowingly harming your health. Many people use their bathroom time to scroll through social media or watch videos, but spending too much time on the toilet can cause problems.
How Sitting Too Long Can Affect Your Health
Spending extra time on the toilet can do more than just numb your legs. Doctors are warning that prolonged sitting can lead to health issues. Dr. Joe Whittington, a doctor who shares advice online, explained that sitting on the toilet for too long can cause blood to pool around your anus. This can lead to hemorrhoids, which are swollen veins in the anus or lower rectum.
Dr. Whittington shared in a TikTok video, “I tell my patients that sitting on the toilet for too long causes blood to pool in your anal veins, which may cause hemorrhoids. So, it’s better to not spend too much time scrolling while on the toilet.”
What Are Hemorrhoids?
The Mayo Clinic defines hemorrhoids as swollen veins around the anus or rectum, similar to varicose veins. They can develop due to pressure from sitting too long on the toilet. Hemorrhoids may be internal or external, and the increased pressure from sitting can cause them to swell, which leads to discomfort and sometimes pain.
Other Causes of Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids can also be caused by straining during bowel movements, constipation, diarrhea, or even lifting heavy objects. But sitting on the toilet for long periods increases the pressure on the veins around your anus, which can result in more severe hemorrhoid problems like blood clots or inflammation.
So, next time you’re tempted to stay on the toilet longer, consider cutting it short to protect your health.
