Life is full of surprises, both good and bad. We never know what challenges may come, but one thing is certain: we should never lose hope or stop fighting for better days.
Chelsea Hough was excited to meet her baby boy. Her pregnancy was normal, and at 36 weeks, she gave birth to Karson Jax Hough.
At first, Karson appeared healthy. Then suddenly, his heart rate slowed, and his heart stopped. Doctors tried skin-to-skin contact with his mother, which briefly restarted his heart. However, his condition worsened, and he needed a ventilator to breathe and keep his heart functioning.
Doctors soon discovered Karson had two rare health issues. One was a hemorrhage in his left temporal lobe, and the other was nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH), a rare genetic condition causing glycine buildup in the body.
They explained Karson’s chance of survival was slim. After careful thought, the family decided to follow the doctors’ advice to remove life support.
The family prayed, and they were told they would have just 10 minutes with Karson before he passed. But when the ventilator was turned off, something unexpected happened: Karson started breathing on his own.
The doctors were stunned. “Today, we witnessed a miracle,” Karson’s grandmother, Lisa Hough, wrote. “We were told his heart would stop within 10 minutes, but God and Karson had other plans.”
Although the family doesn’t know how long they have with Karson, they are cherishing every moment. Lisa said, “I’m not sure why I thought we were undeserving of a miracle, but we have him now, and that’s what matters.”
At home, Karson began to thrive. His weight is now healthy, his heart rate is stable, and his glycine levels have dropped significantly. He is beating the odds every day.
We wish Karson and his family strength, happiness, and good health in the days ahead.
