After years in the spotlight, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are making another big change—they’re leaving the United States.
Ellen, known for her humor and daytime talk show, recently retired from the entertainment world. Her long-running series, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, ended in 2022 after 19 seasons. She later announced her Netflix comedy special, filmed in 2024, would be her final project.
Around the same time, Ellen and Portia celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary, which Ellen described as “lucky and special.” Retirement wasn’t their only change—they’re also moving abroad.
Ellen is known for mixing comedy with heartfelt moments, but her career faced challenges. In 2020, reports of a toxic workplace environment on her show surfaced, leading to claims of harassment and discrimination.
Although Ellen wasn’t directly accused, the controversy hurt her reputation. Former employees criticized her leadership, saying, “That ‘be kind’ stuff only happened on camera.” Ellen admitted problems occurred behind the scenes and called the experience “devastating.”
Ellen stayed low-key after her show ended, aside from her comedy tour, Ellen’s Last Stand… Up. Reflecting on her journey, she joked, “This is the second time I’ve been kicked out of showbiz. Eventually, they’ll do it again because I’m old, mean, and gay.”
Her humor aside, Ellen admitted the scandal took a toll on her confidence.
A new chapter in the UK
The couple’s move was reportedly influenced by Donald Trump’s reelection. Ellen and Portia had already bought a property in the Cotswolds and decided to relocate after Trump’s victory.
While their Montecito estate hasn’t been listed for sale, the move to the quiet countryside reflects their desire for a slower, more private life.
Ellen joked during her Netflix special: “The ‘Be kind’ girl wasn’t kind. Had I ended the show by saying, ‘Go f*** yourselves,’ people might’ve been surprised to find out I’m nice.”
