Xueli’s Journey: From Abandonment to Modeling Inspiration

Albinism is a rare genetic condition found worldwide across all ethnic groups. It results in little or no melanin production, causing light-colored skin, hair, and eyes. Unfortunately, people with albinism often face stigma and discrimination, particularly in underdeveloped countries.

In China, 16 years ago, a baby girl with albinism was born. Her parents, shocked by her snow-white skin, chose to abandon her just days after her birth. She was placed in an orphanage where the staff named her Xueli, meaning “snow white and beautiful.” Though her start in life was heartbreaking, Xueli’s story took a hopeful turn when a family from the Netherlands adopted her, giving her a loving home and a fresh start.

From Orphan to Model

At 11 years old, Xueli caught the attention of a renowned photographer from Hong Kong. The photographer invited her to join a campaign called “Perfect Imperfections,” which celebrated unique beauty. Xueli also participated in a fashion show in Hong Kong, an experience she describes as incredible. Since then, Xueli has worked as a model and used her platform to raise awareness about albinism and redefine beauty standards.

The Harsh Reality of Albinism

In some parts of the world, harmful myths surround albinism. People with the condition are sometimes targeted for body parts due to the belief that their bones have magical powers. These horrific practices have left many individuals with albinism injured or disfigured.

Aware of these dangers, Xueli considers herself fortunate. “I was lucky I was only abandoned,” she said in an interview.

Spreading Awareness

Through her modelling and advocacy, Xueli hopes to inspire others to see beauty in differences and raise awareness about the challenges faced by people with albinism. Her journey reminds us that resilience and love can overcome even the toughest beginnings.
