Haliey Welch, famously known as “Hawk Tuah Girl,” gained massive online attention this summer for her bold NSFW comments about relationships. With nearly three million Instagram followers and her own podcast, Haliey recently ventured into cryptocurrency by launching her meme coin, HAWK, on December 4.
A Rocky Start for HAWK Coin
Initially, HAWK saw a meteoric rise, with its market cap peaking at $490 million. However, the success didn’t last long. Within hours, the coin’s value plunged by 91%, falling to just $41.7 million, as reported by CoinTelegraph. Investors were quick to voice their frustrations, with some claiming to have lost significant sums of money.
One Twitter user shared that their $35,000 investment dropped to $2,000 in minutes. Another investor alleged that Haliey’s team failed to disclose critical information, including claims that she purchased most of the coin’s supply and sold it for a profit.
Allegations of Fraud
The dramatic fall in HAWK’s value has led to accusations of a “rug pull,” a scam where developers abandon a crypto project and leave investors at a loss. Some critics even suggested legal action, saying Haliey “deserves to be in jail.”
Haliey Defends Herself
Haliey addressed the backlash during a live Twitter stream, denying any wrongdoing. She stated that neither she nor her team sold any tokens and highlighted efforts to prevent early traders from exploiting the coin. Critics, however, remain skeptical, accusing her team of insider trading.
YouTuber Stephen “Coffeezilla” joined the conversation, calling HAWK’s launch one of the “most miserable” crypto rollouts he had seen, citing insider trading and fees linked to Haliey’s accounts.
The controversy has left Haliey and her followers divided, with many investors still reeling from their losses.
