This story does a wonderful job of detailing the issues of the modern family, especially where old-world cultures and beliefs is up close and personal with today’s liberal views surrounding the roles of women and men and how they should properly contribute to the family and the household. The case of Rachel can be characterized as typical for many families as far as recognisable issues arising from opposing expectancies which have been formed by one’s background and regarding relationships with in-laws are concerned.
The Conflict
The main contradiction of the tale is great between Rachel and Walter, the father of Daniel. The stereotypical attitude that Walter brings to the series concerning women as subordinate irritates the relationship between Rachel and Daniel because they have successfully formed a business partnership. The last thing that makes Rachel annoyed with Walter —the fact that Daniel, not only has no objections against his father’s opinions but also easily agrees with him —is the final blow that leads to an argument. This moment makes a break, and both men are to change their traditional thinking about division of work in a household.
Breaking Down Gender Roles
This is the reaction of Rachel to the Walter’s comment that would be loved by all women in as much as it is an important assertion of the principle of equality in a marriage. When Daniel questions her job and her inability to work while she has to cook and clean, she insists that both the husband and wife have their own full-time jobs to do, mainly due to the changing roles in the modern families that both have jobs. Her demand for equal treatment does not only represent her ideals but also brings the consciousness of the two males, Daniel and Walter.
Communications As an Ingredient in an Organization
That was the consequence of the quarrel which shows that conversation is essential in any relationships. That is why Daniel’s final apology can be interpreted as a stage when he realizes how his father’s words influence his actions. This scene should also point out that couple has to share their values and expectations, this is especially important when external pressure rises, such as family rules.
Growth and Understanding
Another critical motif of the work under analysis is the gradual realization of the necessity of alteration on Walter’s part. His statement about respect and teamwork reflect the change of the attitude; as far as I understand it he wanted to illustrate that even such a man who has traditional outlook can evolve. It’s not only helps the personal relation ship between Rachel and Daniel but also improves the health of the family for all parties.
Supportive Family Environment
When the process of working as a family is starting, the focus is placed on establishing an environment in which all people will be needed. Ruth’s new found assertiveness to state her opinion progress in the family while the emancipation from tradition might indeed be beneficial for all the characters on the show and in real life.
