I thought I knew every little thing about Jessica — the way she smiled, the way she glanced at me. But when I saw her with my best friend, Elone, sharing quiet words and secretive looks, I realised I didn’t know her as well as I thought. Something was off, and whatever it was, they didn’t want me to kno
Jessica and I had been together for three years. She’s amazing — funny, smart, a bit too organised, but in an endearing way. The one strange thing was how she and Elone never really got along. It wasn’t hatred, but there was always some tension between them.
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed something odd. They started talking more, actually engaging in conversations. Normally, I did most of the talking when we hung out, just to keep things from getting uncomfortable.
Then, last Saturday, I ran into them at a coffee shop. Jessica and Elone were sitting together, laughing, no awkwardness at all. I stood there, unsure if I should interrupt or act like I hadn’t seen anything. But when Jessica grabbed Elone’s hand, it hit me — something was definitely off.
Days went by, and I waited for Jessica to mention it, but she never did. I tried to ignore it, but then one night, while we were watching a movie, her phone buzzed. She quickly typed a reply and didn’t look at me.
“Who was that?” I asked.
“Just someone from work,” she said, avoiding my eyes.
It didn’t help ease the growing tension. Finally, at a wedding, I saw them together again, whispering and laughing. I couldn’t take it anymore. I walked up to them and demanded, “What’s going on between you two?”
Before they could answer, Jessica stood up and called me to the mic. She kneeled in front of me, holding out a ring. “Will you marry me?” she asked.
I froze, speechless. But I finally managed to say, “Yes.”
