Miriam was looking forward to a quiet vacation in the Bahamas. Five years of grief had worn her down, and she was hoping this trip would help her relax. At sixty-five, it had been a long time since she had time for herself.
She arrived at The Ocean Club Resort, happy to finally be somewhere peaceful. The sound of tourists and luggage carts filled the lobby as she checked in. Just as she was getting comfortable, she saw two familiar faces across the room.
Her daughter Pamela and son-in-law Frank were standing by the gift shop. But that was impossible—they had died in a car crash five years ago. Miriam couldn’t believe her eyes. Her heart raced as she grabbed the key from the receptionist and ran after them.
“Pamela!” Miriam shouted as she followed them out of the lobby. The couple turned, their faces showing shock and fear. They tried to walk away quickly, but Miriam caught up with them outside.
“Stop!” she shouted, “Or I’ll call the police!” The couple froze.
Pamela’s eyes filled with tears, and Miriam felt confused. Why was Pamela crying? Was it guilt? Or something else?
They went back to their hotel room, and Miriam demanded answers. Frank explained, “We won the lottery.” Miriam couldn’t believe it. They had faked their deaths to escape their old lives and avoid responsibilities.
“We just wanted a fresh start,” Pamela said quietly. But Miriam was furious. “You left everyone behind for money?”
Pamela’s face fell. “I’m sorry, Mom. I didn’t want to, but Frank said—”
Miriam turned to leave, her heart broken. She couldn’t stay there anymore. But she didn’t report them. Miriam hoped one day Pamela might come back and make things right.
Three years later, Pamela showed up at Miriam’s door. She was soaking wet, looking tired and defeated.
“Mom, I’m so sorry,” Pamela said, explaining how everything had fallen apart. “I don’t know where else to go.”
Miriam listened, her heart still torn. She didn’t know if she could forgive her daughter, but a part of her wanted to.
