Lifeguard Tamayo Perry Dies in Shark Attack
Tamayo Perry, a respected waterman from Hawaii, tragically lost his life on June 23, when he was fatally injured in a shark attack off Goat Island on Oahu’s North Shore. Perry, 49, had been serving as a lifeguard with Honolulu Ocean Safety for eight years, where he was known for his dedication and bravery.
A Heroic Lifeguard
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi expressed his deep sadness, saying, “Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and colleagues in Ocean Safety during this incredibly difficult time.” Perry, who had always been committed to ensuring the safety of both residents and visitors, was remembered as a hero. “His heroic actions and tireless efforts will never be forgotten,” Blangiardi added.
The Shark Attack
The Honolulu Emergency Services Department confirmed that Perry was attacked while surfing near Goat Island at around 1 p.m. local time. The person who called emergency services described the surfer’s body as having multiple bite wounds. Lifeguards retrieved his body from the water using a Jet Ski, and paramedics declared him dead at the scene.
A Surfer’s Legacy
Perry was a well-known figure in the surfing community, particularly for his skills at Pipeline, one of the most famous surf spots in the world. His wife, Emilia Perry, shared that her husband “left this world doing what he loved, where he loved to do it.”
Condolences from the Surfing World
Many in the surfing community paid their respects following Perry’s death. Surfer Kelly Slater tweeted, “This one is hard to believe…You truly lived the life you loved.” Perry was remembered for his passion, both as a lifeguard and as a surfer, and for his love of the ocean.
