This question came up when a mom named Allison shared a moment with her kids during a day at the pool. The 30-year-old mother of two had a response to being called “fat” that has since gone viral.
Allison Kimmey, now known for her inspiring messages about body positivity, had struggled with weight concerns in the past. At 14, she started dieting and stayed a size two to four through school. But it was exhausting, and she wasn’t happy.
At 27, Allison reached a size eight and decided to stop battling her weight. She started embracing her body and spreading positivity on Instagram (@allisonkimmey). She now shares photos and uplifting posts, though not everyone is on board with her message.
Recently, Allison took her kids to the pool. When it was time to leave, her daughter got upset and called her “fat.” Instead of reacting harshly, Allison turned it into a teaching moment. She later described the incident on Instagram:
Me: “What did you say about me?”
Her: “I said you were fat, mama. I’m sorry.”
Me: “Let’s talk about it. The truth is, I am not fat. No one IS fat. It’s not something you can BE. But I do HAVE fat. We all do—it protects our muscles and bones and gives us energy. Do you have fat?”
Her: “Yes, I have some on my tummy.”
Me: “That’s right, and so does your brother!”
When her son insisted he had none, Allison gently explained: “Everyone has fat. Some have more, some have less, but it doesn’t make anyone better or worse.”
Both kids repeated what they learned: “You can’t BE fat, but everyone HAS fat, and that’s okay!”
By teaching her kids this lesson, Allison wanted to show them how to treat others equally. Her Instagram post went viral, with many applauding her approach.
“If I shame them for saying it, I teach them it’s an insult,” she wrote. Instead, Allison showed them how to embrace differences—and the internet loved it.
