My daughter dropped off my grandson and vanished – three weeks later, a call shattered my heart

A Surprise Visit

One day, I wasn’t expecting any visitors, so I was surprised when the doorbell rang. I opened the door and found my daughter, Jane, and my grandson, Tommy.

“Mom, I need a favor,” she said. “Can you take care of Tommy for a few weeks, maybe longer?” I noticed the large suitcase she was carrying, and I knew something serious was happening. Jane wasn’t someone who asked for favors often, so I didn’t press her for details. I just gave her a hug and promised to take care of Tommy while she was away.

A Growing Concern

My grandson, Tommy, was full of energy and joy. He was easy to entertain, and I didn’t mind spending time with him. We played games, read stories, and had his favorite meals. One day, while changing his t-shirt after he spilled juice, I opened Jane’s suitcase to grab a new one. What I found shocked me. The suitcase was packed with clothes for every season—jackets and gloves at the top, shorts and flip-flops underneath. At the bottom was an envelope with my name on it. Inside were more bills than I’d ever seen.

I realized then that Jane wasn’t planning to come back anytime soon, maybe not ever.

The Search for Answers

I tried calling Jane, but I couldn’t reach her. Days passed, and Tommy started asking about his mom. I contacted her friends and coworkers, but no one had heard from her. It was as if she had vanished.

Then one day, Jane called. She asked to speak to Tommy, but she wouldn’t answer any of my questions. She only told me to trust her and promised she would return. After speaking with Tommy, she hung up, and I couldn’t get through to her again.

The Truth About Tommy’s Father

It was then that I realized the truth about Tommy’s father. He was a dangerous man involved with the mafia. When I was dating him, I didn’t know what kind of person he really was. After our split, I kept Tommy’s paternity a secret from him, knowing he’d want to take my son from me.

I knew Jane was protecting Tommy from him. She had to leave to keep him safe.

Jane’s Return

When Jane finally returned to pick up Tommy, she looked worn out, almost as if she had aged in the time she was gone. I didn’t ask questions; I was just relieved that she was safe.
