A Day in the Woods
It was a calm day in the woods, perfect for some target practice. I set myself up behind a fallen log, settled in, and took a photo of the peaceful scene. The sun streamed through the trees, and I was enjoying the moment with my rifle in hand. I sent the picture to my husband, expecting him to be impressed by the setting and my aim.
The Unexpected Response
I looked at the picture again, and that’s when confusion set in. My husband’s response was blunt: “That’s not your hat.”
I was taken aback. “It’s mine,” I replied, trying to defend the image. I thought about the white cowboy hat lying next to me in the picture.
“No, it’s not,” he snapped back. “You’ve never had a hat like that. That’s his hat.”
Realization and Tension
His words hit me hard. I understood exactly what he meant. The hat next to me wasn’t just any hat—it was the same kind my ex-boyfriend always wore. Even worse, it was almost identical to one he had given me years ago, a hat I thought I had gotten rid of.
My heart started to race as I tried to explain that I had just grabbed any hat before going out. But my husband wasn’t listening. To him, it wasn’t a simple coincidence—it felt like a sign that I was holding on to something from my past.
No matter how many times I assured him it was unintentional, he wasn’t convinced. The fact that I had taken that photo with that particular hat beside me was enough for him to believe something wasn’t right. The damage was done, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that the past had crept back into our present.
