Our Daughter Tried to Turn Our 40th Anniversary Trip into Her Free Vacation with Babysitting Service — So I Taught Her a Lesson

A Hard-Learned Lesson: Keeping Our Anniversary for Us

The Trip of a Lifetime

My wife Maggie and I were thrilled to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary with a peaceful getaway for two. We planned a cozy trip to a small inn on the coast of Maine, where we could relax and relive old memories.

Jane’s Request

When our youngest daughter, Jane, found out about the trip, she insisted that her family join us. She used guilt to push her point, claiming her kids would feel left out. Despite my efforts to explain that this trip was just for Maggie and me, Jane kept calling, pleading, and making her case. Eventually, my wife wavered, and to keep the peace, I reluctantly agreed to change our plans.

The Switch

We swapped our serene getaway for a family-friendly resort in Florida. Jane and her husband Nick would cover their flights, while Maggie and I handled the rest, including tickets for their kids. Soon, the demands piled up—snacks, pool trips, babysitting duties, and even bedtime routines. The final straw came when Jane expected us to babysit nightly so she and Nick could enjoy the nightlife.

Taking Back Control

I realized this wasn’t the anniversary trip we envisioned. Without telling anyone, I rebooked our original trip. The day before the flight, I told Maggie we were sticking to Maine. She was hesitant, but I reassured her.

The Aftermath

Jane was furious when I told her, but we left anyway. The week in Maine was perfect—quiet and refreshing. Jane and her family went to the resort but found it chaotic without extra help.

A Lesson Learned

Setting boundaries was hard, but necessary. Sometimes, you need to protect your own time—even from family.
