Parents discover heartfelt note from son before his death from brain infection

The Heartbreaking Story of Leland Shoemake

Losing a child is a pain no parent should ever experience, but it’s a reality that some families face. Leland Shoemake, a 6-year-old from Williamson, Georgia, had a life filled with joy and curiosity, but tragically, his story ended too soon.

A Bright and Joyful Boy

Leland was known for his boundless energy, love for learning, and big heart. From a young age, he amazed his family with his intellect—he knew his ABCs, numbers, and even sight words before he was one. His mom, Amber Shoemake, remembers how he loved school, documentaries, and anything about history. He was a curious soul with an infectious smile.

The Sudden Illness

In 2015, Leland fell ill unexpectedly, and his condition rapidly worsened. Doctors discovered he had contracted a rare brain infection caused by the amoeba Balamuthia mandrillaris. It was a difficult diagnosis, and no one could figure out exactly how he came into contact with the bacteria. His mom recalls how Leland loved playing in the dirt, never imagining that it could have led to this.

Despite all efforts, Leland passed away on September 25, 2015, leaving his family in unimaginable grief.

A Final Message

After Leland’s death, his parents found a note he had left behind for them. It simply read: “Stil (sic) with you… Thank you mom and dad… Love,” along with a red heart and the words “mom,” “dad,” and “love” inside. This note became a bittersweet reminder of his love, offering a small piece of comfort during their darkest time.

Remembering Leland

Although nothing can replace their son, Leland’s parents keep his memory alive by sharing his story. It’s a reminder to cherish every moment and to find strength, even in life’s hardest challenges.
