Prince William was reportedly concerned that his brother, Prince Harry, might be “blindsided by lust” during his early relationship with Meghan Markle, according to claims made in a new book.
The couple, who met on a blind date in July 2016, became serious quickly, announcing their engagement in November 2017 and marrying the following May at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. However, the book Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family suggests that William had reservations about the pace of their relationship.
The book, written by royal experts Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, alleges that William wanted to ensure Meghan’s intentions were genuine. A source cited in the book claimed William felt protective of Harry, as both brothers had faced people trying to exploit their royal status. “After all, these are two brothers that have spent their whole lives with people trying to take advantage of them,” the source said.
William reportedly advised Harry to take his time, saying, “Don’t feel you need to rush this. Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl.” According to the authors, Harry perceived William’s advice as carrying a tone of “snobbishness,” which clashed with his own perspective on life and relationships.
While the authors interviewed sources close to Harry and Meghan for the book, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex denied having any direct involvement. A spokesperson for the couple stated, “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not interviewed and did not contribute to Finding Freedom.”
The book explores the dynamics that led to Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal duties, shedding light on the challenges and missteps within the royal family. It is set to be published in August.
