Retired Couple Chooses Life at Sea Over a Retirement Home
Marty and Jess Ansen, a married couple from Australia, decided to approach retirement differently. Instead of settling in a retirement home, they opted to live on a cruise ship, which they believe is more affordable. Over the past 18 months, they’ve embarked on an incredible journey, spending their retirement on 51 consecutive cruises aboard the Coral Princess.
A Unique Way of Life
The couple started their adventure in June of last year and have since embraced a lifestyle filled with dancing, gourmet meals, and making friends from around the world. They humorously note that they now welcome the ship’s captains, reversing the traditional guest-host relationship. Their cheerful presence has earned them a reputation among passengers and crew alike. Manager Ren van Rooyen shared that other travelers often request to meet the inspiring couple during their cruises.
From Lockdown to the Open Sea
Marty and Jess turned to full-time cruising after the pandemic lockdowns in Australia left them feeling stuck. Frustrated by the restrictions and missed opportunities, they decided to live life differently. Marty explained, “I told my travel agent to just book whatever was available, and that’s how it all started.”
More Than Just a Holiday
Living on the cruise ship comes with perks—meals are included, housekeeping is taken care of, and there’s no need to cook or clean. Marty jokingly says they’ve forgotten how to do everyday tasks like making a bed. The ship’s crew, who have grown fond of the couple, even made Jess’s recent birthday extra special.
What’s Next for the Ansens?
The couple’s days start with ping pong, followed by relaxing on the deck with cold drinks and enjoying the buffet. Their next stop is Hawaii, but their journey aboard the Coral Princess will continue for eight more months. Looking ahead, Marty and Jess are already planning a year-long trip on the Crown Princess. For them, life at sea is the perfect way to enjoy retirement.
