Stepfather almost wins custody battle, girl says three words that change everything

A Spiraling Downward
The more days passed, the more Janet realized she was struggling to stay in a life that she had envisaged would ultimately make her happy. The early signs of control and manipulation had developed into a very constricting situation. Janet become insecure and Roger became angry and clingy. She would always be walking on egg shells around him because she never knew how he would treat her in one given moment because all she wanted was to stay safe and keep the home calm.

The Dark Reality
The abuse began with verbal aggression and manipulation, which became physical aggression in Roger. The symptoms which had started with verbal aggressiveness moved to the use of physical force. Janet was afraid of him, mostly for the life of her daughter Jasmine. Despite the decision she made that her daughter was not going to suffer as she did growing up she could do nothing. The gentle, loving husband and the father that everyone knew came crumbling down and what was left was a man full of anger and addiction.

A Mother’s Despair
Just when the custody battle began Janet experienced hopelessness. She had managed to fight for Jasmine to stay safe and joyous, but now all looked like something she could not influence anymore. Roger with support of his lawyer didn’t stop manipulating the situation and portraying Janet as an unfit mother who wants to take the daughter away for no reason. The severity of the unacceptable situation of trauma and loss for a period of ten years rested heavily on her heart.. The only thing she could do was to hope that Jasmine would recognize the falsehoods being said about her.

The Turning Point
In the courtroom, things changed dramatically after a painful statement for Jasmine about living with Roger. The judge saw the real concern reflected in Janet’s eyes and thought for a moment. Even though Jasmine’s answer leaned the case in Roger’s favor, he seemed to win rather shallow, considering theाँ dramatic impact visible in the courtroom.

‘Jasmine,’ the judge called her softly, seeing the little girl holding a teddy bear; ‘is this what you really want?’ To live with your father?”

Jasmine paused a moment with her young brain first deciding between the two different pieces of advice she had gotten from Roger. She now felt like she indeed knows what she felt – those brightest moments with her mother that she had been cherishing far outweigh the fake, fake bliss that Roger had fabricated.

The Voice of Innocence
That is when everyone was surprised by Jasmine. Mulling tears in her eyes she was able to stand and say her words clearly, although she felt a tremble in her throat. “I… And so it surprised everybody when she said, “I want to live with my mom.” “She makes me feel safe.”

The courtroom fell silent. There was a moment of clear disappointment on Roger’s face when he saw that he can no longer manipulate her. The words of the plaintiff seemed to bring a stir to the judge and he looked at him compassionately. And Jasmine, you do not have to shut yourself up by saying what you really have on your mind about this.” ”Are you comfortable with your dad?”

No, said Jasmine moving her head vigorously-looking frail and anxious. At times he becomes very angry and especially I did not like it When he is like that. I feel scared.”

The Judge’s Decision
The judge understanding that the girl was really terrified held some dilemma. In the light of the situation and the new facts which have revealed Roger’s conduct, a decision was not long in coming. He asked for a social worker to visit his home and evaluate the situation and make a ruling on what they deemed would be in Jasmine’s best interests.

“Considering all that I’ve seen here and the words of Jasmine, I will allow her mother to have temporary custody of the child until additional investigations from social services are conducted,” the judge said as he banged the gavel. Roger sighed, speeches, deeds, and plans falling through his lap.

A Mother’s Return
Judge Herb pulled out the verdict just as the courtroom filled with noise of thundering voices that seemed to say ‘Guilty’, Janet cried tears of joy and gladness. In that moment, she understood that the judges and the perfectly formulated law were able to discern the metallic mask, behind which there was Roger. They comprehended the depth of what love a mother had for her child was endless though it was darkness of the night had rolled its dark blanket upon the crows. Janet embraced Jasmine who leaned her head on her mother’s breast for the first time in a long time.

The Road to Healing
The next weeks were dedicated to therapy and counseling for Jasmine and Janet along with other periods of regaining the coordination after the noisy and confused life they used to have. Being careful, the social worker assisted them to find their way as they started to phase their lives back again. It took a long time for Janet to recover her self confidence but she finally found the courage to take her life and that of her daughter forward.

Building a Safe Space
In this case Janet needed help not only for Jasmine but also for herself. She started attending a self-help group of women in the similar position as her, that was very helpful. She focussed on getting a steady source of income to be able to take care of Jasmine whilst at the same time giving them both the kind of mother-daughter bond they each required. Janet gradually transformed their home to a safe haven, love environment after they had been living in asuch a dysfunctional family.

A Lesson of Strength
That said, Janet got to appreciate what true love is as well as the strength and value of fighting for oneself. Further, she realized that even when a person feels highly desperate, there is still a chance for that person to open a new sprout of hope and help, which can be found by little children. This countering of tragedy was the first ‘map’ of their healing journey which was neither about surviving trials, but of the explicit, persistent, triumphant love between a mother and a daughter.

Inspired by the people around her and with newfound confidence, Janet assumed a position facing the future hand in hand with Jasmine. Together they will write a new story which in fact will be postscriptum for a story marked by adversity, but full of hope.

Making the Best of the Worst
Janet had always been a talent to maneuver through a crisis, but turning Jasmine into a client of Roger’s rage was something she would not allow herself to do. In order to spare her daughter all his anger and rage she did whatever she could to make herself believe that things were not as bad as they seemed. Yes, they had a place to call home; yes, Roger could be nice sometimes—sometimes, he was; those moments were far and in-between. However, as she reflected on her choices, the reality hit hard: Those little moments of treatment made them understand it was not good enough for them to keep living a life full of fear and pain. Much as Janet thought she should have left the union long ago, she now saw the chance had slipped through her fingers.

A Shrewd Judge
According to the judge in the courtroom, Jasmine was afraid to pronounce her stepfather’s name; her face was full of fear. He knew better than the other that he was dealing with family law and was able to read the tension in the room. It was clear that the judge was able to see through all this sham that Roger was portraying when he begged for the kids’ custody and the hopelessness reflected on Janet’s face. But the judge decided to pursue the fact, he recalled jasmine to the stand, his face solemn but friendly.

The Three Words
“Jasmine,” he started gently, “can you explain to me and the court why you want to go live your stepfather?” The question has been put into words, and for a second the room was again filled with dead silence. Taking a deep breath, Jasmine finally blurted out the words that would turn the tide: “He killed Rover.”

Foreheads creased and eyes widened, a murmur of ‘Gasps’ ministered around the courtroom and Jasmine wiped away her tears. The judge handed her a handkerchief, he silently looked at her with mercy and encouraged her to go on. “Okay, please, can you please enlighten us on what transpired?”

Jasmine Speaks
Strangled by tears, Jasmine reconstructed the actions that she staging on the Friday evening. Then she was narrating how her mother and Roger had been quarreling and how their pet dog Rover had shield Janet. However, one day Roger overpowered his anger towards her and with a big bang all that was left of Rover was history. Jasmine’s voice quivered as she recalled Roger’s threats against her mother, the fear that had driven her to comply with him: “I did not want Mommy too to die”

The Aftermath of Revelation
The courtroom bowed into utter silence; the realisation of what Jasmine had said could not sink in quickly. The judge, wore a stern look on his face proceeded to recall Janet back to the witness stand. In the spirit of her daughter Janet finally gathered the courage and brought the real story of her life with Roger starting with the violence and abuse, going through the manipulation, and culminating with the death of their dog. She told me how Roger had bundled Rover into a rug and buried him, thinking that he could effectively eliminate all records of his violence.

Trapped
Something that grew increasingly apparent was the true nature of the situation: Roger’s mask had fallen. It did not bring back the lies that he had spun, the rage that he had vented, but put them out in the public domain. His lawyer could only sit frozen while they tried to parse Jasmine’s testimony and the impact it could have on the case. At that Cambodian moment the sorts of thinking exhibited by Roger were to justify its actions as ‘necessary’ for controlling Janet and Jasmine. But somewhere in his soul he understood that he was slowly losing all.

The Final Verdict
After a break, the judge resumed his ruling to give a verdict. He sternly spoke to Roger expressing his outrage that the man exploits the weakness of the woman and fear of a child. The charges against him were serious: Willful maltreatment of an animal, abusive action on the defendant’s part towards the plaintiff, and the filing of an improper complaint. The judge finally ordered Roger to be jailed for eight years and to me it was appropriate for him. He also granted her rights of custody of Jasmine but on the condition that Janet should accept to undergo a welfare program to address the needs of the family.

The Victory
Janet heaved a sign as soon as the gavel descended. The bad times they had when they are with Roger were over and she can finally take Jasmine home, devoid with Roger’s color. They hugged each other, laughing through their sorrow and brokenness for the new life they were about to begin.

The New Chapter
Hoping for a better life she dedicated herself to the wellness program intending to complete it this time. She tried reconnecting with friends and family members she had not contacted during the period of her fiery affair with Roger. They later moved to a suburban area of Rochester, where they stayed near Janet’s sister to change their environment. Jasmine did very well for herself in the new place since she was happy when her aunt took her out, and even bought her a new puppy to symbolise new start.

A Vengeful Roger
While Roger was in jail stewing in his prison cell, he festered with anger and bitterness. He had turned into a tyrant among prisoners who could not even understand what was happening to him. This man did not take time to think of what he did, rather he planned on how to bring Janet and Jasmine to their knees because he believed that they would bring him down. He reached out to his biker friends, instructing them to deliver a message: he would come back and they could not elude him [JONES billion 282].

A Message Transmitted
Whenever Roger’s former associates landed in Rochester, Janet fumed with dreadful nerves. This was how she was met by a squad of some very nasty looking fellows the moment she opened the door. Still to her chagrin, one of them moved closer, his words almost apologetic. “We know what Roger is like,” he said quietly. “We sorry for not informing you before We apologize for not having informed earlier. We want to help.”

Protection for the Future
The bikers told Janet and Jasmine that they will protect them from Roger and promised that nothing of harm would happen to them. When the man began to leave, Janet felt deep down adoration in her head and heart; she could not help blubbering. For the first time in years she felt that blanket of security settle over her. She no longer had no one on her side as she realized that Roger was capable of harm and people close to her agreed with her.

These are now looking towards a brighter future, to find themselves struggling to survive in their native land, and facing physical extermination by a foreign power thirsting for Ethiopian blood.

Janet had not been inexperienced and made mistakes along the way as the process of leading her life has been quite difficult. However, the love of her and Jasmine had stood a chance against this chaos and storms. Together they grew stronger building a future for themselves which held hope in its every corner. Thanks for the newly found muscles and her friends, Janet was ready to change the lives for the better and give her daughter a chance for a happy and protected life far from their past. The future appeared to be promising, and they were going to move forward holding each other’s hands.
