The reason behind the tiny pocket inside your jeans

But wait, why was such a convenient little pocket put here? Fortunately, we have an answer that could really be an eye opener to many.
Oh yes I do remember reading somewhere, probably in fashion designers’ forums, have you ever asked yourself what that smaller pocket that is contained within that larger pocket on your jeans is for. Yes that small hole, which appears to be just big enough to fit a needle and hold just enough for a drop of blood. If you’ve ever tried to insert something into them, you’ll realize that it can’t hold a phone and inserting cash or keys is very uncomfortable.
Virtually all jeans for men and women have two front pockets and two back pockets with some having additional pockets. But if you look at the seam you would realize that it is always accompanied by a minuscule interior pocket within one of the frontal pockets. Most jeans have it and its presence has left many of us scratching our heads.

Ah, but there is one small pocket or pouch, and as suggested before, it will not hold anything of good measure. So what’s the purpose? And to know this, we have to go back nearly two centuries. That’s a small additional pocket that is not at all a feature of modern vehicles, but it was developed to address a problem that simply does not exist now.

This is an interesting question that only one company of the world can answer and it is none other than Levi’s the producer of jeans.

The Independent News paper notes that the ventelial or the first “extra” pocket was a fashion in the 1800s. Its purpose? To serve the most common wearers of jeans at the time: cowboys.

Cowboys wore their pocket watches around their necks or inside their waistcoats but this exposed them to loss, damage as they performed their daily duties. To rectify this, Levi’s came up with a small pocket in the coat to provide a safe place for holding a watch. These pockets could be kept with watches and other items to prevent them from being broken when the cowboys where riding.

Talk about innovation!

I had no idea either. One must wonder why this design has been retained up to this time in jeans. Though cowboys are no longer present physically in today’s world, their watch pockets still exist.
