A Targeted Attack in Midtown Manhattan

On the morning of December 4, Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan. Thompson, 50, was en route to an investor conference when an unknown gunman approached him from behind and fired multiple rounds, hitting him in the back and leg.

He was rushed to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have described the incident as a “targeted, preplanned attack,” with surveillance footage showing the shooter waiting several minutes before the assault.

Suspect’s Escape and Investigation

After firing at Thompson, the attacker fled on foot, switched to a rental bike, and was last seen entering Central Park. Police believe the gunman used a silencer and have recovered shell casings and live rounds from the scene. The motive for the attack remains unclear, but Thompson’s wife, Paulette, mentioned her husband had received threats in the past.

A Legacy in Healthcare

Thompson joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004 and became CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021. He oversaw 140,000 employees and led divisions like Medicare & Retirement and Community & State, showcasing his dedication to senior health and underserved populations.

Before joining UnitedHealth, Thompson worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, conducting audits and advising on mergers. A University of Iowa graduate, he earned valedictorian honors in 1997, highlighting his academic and professional excellence.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are actively investigating the case, and Crime Stoppers has announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. UnitedHealth Group released a statement mourning Thompson’s death and pledging support for the investigation.

Thompson’s death has left his family and the corporate world in shock, with many remembering his contributions to healthcare and his remarkable career.
