Tragic Allergic Reaction Highlights Dangers of Recipe Changes
Alison Pickering, a 23-year-old student from Texas, tragically died on May 12, 2023, after suffering a severe allergic reaction during a first date. Known to have a lifelong peanut allergy, Alison was cautious about food and chose a restaurant she had visited before, ordering a dish she had safely eaten in the past.
Unbeknownst to her, the restaurant had recently changed the recipe for the mahi-mahi dish, adding a peanut sauce. Shortly after eating, Alison realized something was wrong. She administered her Epipen and was taken to an ambulance, but her condition deteriorated, and she passed away.
A Push for Better Awareness
Alison’s family has since advocated for greater awareness about food allergies, particularly within restaurants. Her mother, Joy Pickering, emphasized the need for improved communication between kitchen staff and servers, ensuring diners are informed of any recipe changes involving common allergens. “We know we’re going to save lives by doing this,” she said.
Other Heartbreaking Cases
Alison’s story is not unique. Similar tragedies have occurred, highlighting the risks faced by those with severe allergies. Dr. Kanokporn Tangsuan died after consuming a meal at Disney World Orlando, despite being assured it was safe. In 2020, 23-year-old James Atkinson passed away after eating chicken tikka masala pizza that contained peanuts. Like Alison, both individuals used Epipens but could not survive the reactions.
A Call for Change
The Pickerings’ campaign aims to improve transparency about ingredients and protect those with food allergies. They hope restaurants will adopt stricter policies for communicating recipe changes, especially for allergenic ingredients.
These devastating stories remind us of the importance of vigilance and communication in preventing such preventable tragedies.
