Mary’s marriage to Ed had been strained from the start, largely due to his mother, Scarlett, who seemed intent on making Mary’s life miserable. From the wedding day onward, Scarlett had shown nothing but disdain for her, and each visit seemed to make matters worse.
The drive to Scarlett’s house was always uncomfortable, and Mary couldn’t help but feel relief when it was time to leave. Scarlett’s behavior was always the same—critical and dismissive. At their wedding, Scarlett had worn a veil instead of a proper dress, a clear indication of her contempt. Even now, as they arrived, Mary braced herself for the next round of insults.
When they walked in, Scarlett’s greeting to Ed was over-the-top, hugging him tightly and calling him her “baby.” Her greeting to Mary, however, was a sharp jab. “Well, Mary, I see you’ve gained a few pounds,” she remarked with a smirk.
Dinner that night was unbearable, with Scarlett criticizing Mary’s cooking, her job, and her appearance. But it wasn’t until Scarlett casually mentioned Mary’s struggles to conceive that Mary lost her composure. Scarlett insinuated that Mary had some sort of problem, and Mary, enraged, shot back that maybe Ed was the one with the issue.
After the argument, Mary rushed home, feeling sick. Ed didn’t seem to care. On the way home, she picked up a pregnancy test. The result was positive, but Ed’s reaction was lukewarm at best, making Mary feel isolated and uncertain.
Later, Mary discovered Ed’s affair when she found explicit texts on his phone, showing he had lied about everything. Ed, indifferent to her discovery, even threatened to divorce her and take everything. In desperation, Mary confided in Scarlett about Ed’s lies, only to find out that Scarlett had also been deceived by Ed. Together, they made plans to ensure he faced the consequences.
This story highlights how Mary, though hurt, found strength in unexpected places—like her mother-in-law, who, despite years of coldness, became an ally in her fight.
