Turning Tragedy into Opportunity
In 1993, Jo Ann Ussery faced an overwhelming loss when a storm destroyed her home. With two children to care for and limited resources, Jo Ann needed to find a creative solution. That’s when her brother-in-law, an air traffic controller, suggested something unconventional—a plane. This idea marked the beginning of an incredible transformation, as Jo Ann turned a retired Boeing 727 into a fully functional home.
The Plane Purchase
Jo Ann purchased a decommissioned Boeing 727 for just $2,000, plus the cost of shipping. The plane, which she nicknamed “Little Trump” after Donald Trump’s private jet, became her canvas for a one-of-a-kind home. She spent less than $30,000 on renovations, transforming the aircraft into an amazing living space.
A Major Renovation
The Boeing 727, which measured 138 feet long, provided almost 1,500 square feet of space—ideal for conversion into a home. Jo Ann positioned the plane nose-first over a lake on her property, offering stunning views from the cockpit. Inside, she created a cozy home with three bedrooms, a kitchen, a laundry room, and even a master bathroom. The cockpit became a luxurious bathroom with a soaking tub overlooking the lake, blending the plane’s iconic features with the comfort of a modern home.
A Plane House Like No Other
Jo Ann’s transformation of the plane into a beautiful home became a testament to her vision and creativity. She lived in the plane for several years before planning to turn it into a museum. Sadly, during transportation, the plane was damaged beyond repair. Still, Jo Ann’s story remains an inspiring example of how something as unlikely as an airplane can become a unique and functional home.
